6 Ways to Make Water More Interesting

You already know the importance of staying hydrated, but if you struggle to guzzle glass after glass of plain water, you’re not alone. It can be difficult to make a good sales pitch for plain old water when it’s going toe-to-toe with sports drinks, sodas, and juice, even though it’s much healthier.

So here are a few healthy ways you can jazz up your water to make it less boring and more of a treat than a chore.


Make Tea

The trick with any kind of hot tea is to be careful what you add to it. Be mindful of extra sugar or cream, and keep an eye out for an unexpected dose of caffeine, especially toward the end of the day.

An herbal tea bag adds zero calories, caffeine, or sweetener to your water – but it does add an awful lot of interest and depth. So herbal teas are typically a safe bet, but double-check the label to make sure that your choice is caffeine-free.


Add Fruit Slices

Lemons, limes, oranges, grapefruit, apples… the list goes on. Adding a few fresh fruit slices to your water will gently infuse your drink with a fruity flavor, and may be all the encouragement you need to increase your daily water intake. Also, the ritual of slicing up fruit, adding ice, and gently stirring the drink is reminiscent of making a cocktail, and can send signals to your subconscious that you are doing something very special for yourself.

Have Broth

If you don’t have much of a sweet tooth, you could try a broth which can be very tasty and also extremely hydrating. Natural broths are the best, so be careful not to drink anything with extra sodium or too many added preservatives.

You could also add a few vegetables for a specially hearty, warming treat.

Make Flavored Ice Cubes

Drinking straight fruit juice can add a lot of calories to your diet, but adding a single ice cube made from fruit juice to your water can lend it some of that fruity zip, without the caloric impact.

Another great idea is to freeze slices of fresh fruit or cucumber and use them as ice cube substitutes. This is a similar idea to the fresh fruit slices, but more fun for the warmer months.

Many soda drinkers find that it’s not so much the sugar or artificial sweeteners that keeps them coming back, but the carbonation. Watermelon is called watermelon for a reason. It’s extremely hydrating, and unlike drinking fruit juice, you get the added benefit of eating natural fiber. Other hydrating fruits include pineapple, oranges, cantaloupe, honeydew, peaches, plums, pears, and ripe berries.
