5 Tips for Healthy, Glowing Skin

Every day your skin takes a beating, whether it be from the sun or from the hard water coming out of the showerhead. That’s why it’s important to moisturize every day and to pamper your skin whenever possible. Most people don’t really think about it in this way, but our skin is our first line of defense against all sorts of “invaders”, and it needs to be maintained just like every other part of the body. Here are five simple tips to maintain healthy, glowing skin, even after it has taken a beating.

1. Always Use Sunscreen

The warmth of the sun feels good on your skin, but it can also have adverse effects. Over exposure to the sun causes problems such as wrinkles and age spots. It also increases your chances of developing skin cancer. By simply applying sunscreen, you protect your skin and decrease the likeliness of developing any of these issues. It only takes a minute to apply, and sunscreen is relatively cheap – a small price to pay for optimal protection and glowing skin.

2. Avoid Smoking

If you’re a smoker, you may not want to hear this, but it’s the truth. Smoking narrows the blood vessels in the outermost part of the layers of the skin. This decreases the blood flow and subsequently depletes your skin of oxygen and essential nutrients – all of which contributes to aging of the skin and wrinkling. Smoking also damages vital tissues such as collagen and elastin that improve the elasticity and strength of your skin. Even the faces you make while smoking such as pursing your lips when inhaling and squinting your eyes to avoid smoke  contributes to wrinkles. It’s a nasty habit overall, and it’s devastating to your skin.

3. Be Gentle When Cleansing

Most people don’t notice how rough they are when cleansing and shaving their skin. Constant scrubbing and shaving can lead to dryness, inflammation, and irritation. This ultimately leads to bumps and blemishes that can easily be avoided. Whenever you’re washing your face, shaving your legs, or dealing with any part of your skin, take it easy and use gentle cleansers. Scrubbing doesn’t get you any cleaner than a gentle rub, and you don’t need to shave every day. Pat your skin dry, and always shave in the direction that the skin grows.

4. Eat a Healthy Diet

A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and proteins can do wonders for your skin. Tomatoes and green leafy veggies contain antioxidants, which works to decrease wrinkles and signs of aging. Salmon and other fish rich in omega 3 fats aid in retaining moisture and keep your skin supple. If you’re not excited about eating fish and vegetables every day, then feel free to indulge in some dark chocolate, as it is also full of antioxidants.

5. Manage Your Stress and Get Some Sleep

Stress can make your skin sensitive and cause breakouts of acne and other problems. Keep your stress levels low by taking a breather when you start to feel overwhelmed. Exercise is also a good stress reliever, as is sex. Getting the proper amount of sleep can also decrease stress and brighten up your skin. When you’re tired, your skin sags and has an overall dull look. If you’re unable to get a full night’s sleep, take small naps during the day.

Healthy, glowing skin requires some maintenance on your part, but you don’t need to go out and spend tons of money to achieve this. You can implement these tips today and start seeing results relatively quickly. The main thing to remember here is that your skin can’t maintain itself. It’s ultimately in your best interest to have a basic skin care regimen that includes your whole body, not just your face.
