Beauty routines are already complicated enough as it is. Much as we would love to have hours every day to focus on nothing but us, realistically, that’s not going to happen. In the real world, we need some beauty hacks to help make the process quicker and more efficient.
Here are our 20 favorites.
Undereye concealer should be applied in an upside-down triangle
You look in the mirror and notice you have dark circles under your eyes. Instinctively, you apply concealer in a half moon shape, following the outline of those dark circles. Stop!
Instead, apply concealer beginning along your lower lash line and extending in an upside-down triangle down onto your cheekbone. This is a much more effective way of concealing undereye circles.
Mascara clumping up? Add a few drops of contact lens solution
As your mascara begins to run low or gets near its expiration date, it may turn into a clumpy, crumbly mess. To help smooth things out, add a few drops of multipurpose contact lens solution to your mascara tube, and use the wand to mix in.
How to curl your lashes and line your eyes at the same time
Apply your favorite eyeliner to the top portion of your eyelash curler. Then, when curling your lashes, press the curler firmly against your upper eyelid. When you pull the curler away, you will have curled lashes and a perfect line along your upper lid.
Curl your lashes like a pro
Speaking of eyelash curlers, use your blow dryer to heat it up prior to curling. The results will be much better!
Use a credit card for perfect cat eye every time
If you don’t exactly have a steady hand when it comes to eye make-up, the cat eye look can be very difficult to pull off. Try this: Take a credit card and hold it at an angle that extends from the outer corner of your eye to the lower tip of your eyebrow. Hold this firmly in place while you apply your eyeshadow. When you take the card away, you will have a crisp and defined outer edge to your eye make-up.
Black eyeliner on top, brown on the bottom
Black eyeliner all around your eyes can look very dramatic, but it can also serve to make your eyes appear smaller. Instead, use a brown or auburn shade on your lower lash line, and use a nude liner on your lower water line. This can make your eyes really pop and appear larger.
Need to lighten yellowing nails?
We all love dark nail polish, but the unfortunate down side is that it can stain your nails, leaving them an unattractive yellow. To get your nails back, mix 3 tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide, 3 tablespoons of baking soda, and 1/2 cup of warm water. Soak your nails in the solution until the yellow coloring is gone.
Concerned about thin hair along your parting?
Men are not the only ones with concerns about thinning hair. If your hair looks a bit sparse along your parting, lightly dust a matching eyeshadow shade along your parting to give the illusion of thicker hair.
How to get long-lasting lip color
Apply your favorite lip color, blot, and then hold a tissue against your lips. Using a powder brush, dust a small amount of translucent powder over the tissue. Just enough will make it through to help set your lip color.
Clear nail polish will stop runs/tears in tights
When tights, stockings, or leggings begin to tear, you can stop that tear in its tracks by applying a drop of clear nail polish to each end of the run. This will prevent the tear from spreading and tide you over until you can get home to change.
Overnight foot treatment
Dry, cracked feet can be treated overnight by simply applying a rich lotion or Vaseline to your heels and soles, then wearing a pair of socks to bed. In the morning, you will be amazed at the improvement!
Overslept? Dry shampoo to the rescue
If you hit the snooze button one too many times and now can’t go through the whole showering and styling process, dry shampoo is your new best friend. Simply spray it onto your roots, allow it to dry, then brush it out. No grease, no odor.
You’re probably using bobby pins wrong …
Bobby pins should be worn with the crimped side against your head and the flat part facing out.
Want more dramatic results from your eye pencil?
You can turn regular eyeliner into a gel liner by holding the tip of your eyeliner pencil in a lighter flame for 10 seconds. Give it 15 seconds to cool before applying.
Vaseline + perfume = longer lasting fragrance
Apply a small dab of Vaseline to your pulse points before spraying your perfume. This helps the fragrance last longer.
Use dark concealer under your chin for a more defined jawline
Choose a concealer that is 2 to 3 shades darker than your natural skin tone and apply it to the area under your chin. Be sure to blend well. This contouring gives you a more defined jawline, and can hide the hint of a double chin.
Use white eyeliner as a base for bold colors
All those wonderful jewel-toned eyeshadows will pop much better if you apply a base of white eyeliner first.
Razor burn? Shave with lotion
Those with sensitive skin should try shaving with body lotion, rather than shaving cream or soap. The lotion helps the razor glide over your skin more easily, meaning less chance of razor burn.
Sleep on silk
A silk pillowcase can help your skin look fresher and younger in the morning. It can also help to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Use alcohol wipes before reapplying deodorant
If you need to freshen your deodorant in the middle of the day, swipe an alcohol wipe under your arm first. This kills any odor-causing bacteria, allowing you to apply deodorant on a clean slate, so to speak.
Try incorporating some of these hacks into your daily routine for a much easier and more practical approach to beauty.
